Message from Pat - A-Ha!

"Eureka! - I have found it!"

Photograph 'Bubbles' by H. Koppdelaney

I don't know about you, but I really love those "Eureka!" moments. I love the rush that I get when I realize I have just brilliantly solved a problem, or come up with something very creative, or found the answer to a question that I've been noodling.

It's these moments of insight that I've always wanted to understand and now I least a little bit better.

Insight is a very different process from analytical thought. Analytical thought happens when we work logically through a sequence or a pattern. Insight is not a logical progression to reach a solution, but really a sudden and instant knowing about the answer we're searching for. It is a form of creative thought and it's about taking two separate things and making a new connection. It's a solution that recombines the knowledge in our brain a whole new way.

Through my most recent learnings in the Neuroscience of Leadership, I am finding out that insight is massively important and very much underrated. This is changing. Organizations are finding the value of innovation and creativity and even have Chief Innovation Officers or Chief Creative Officers as part of their executive teams.

Many companies, such as Google, create a working environment that supports and encourages creativity every where you look.

I have come to find out that we can actually help insight along. Here's how:

  • Get quiet. Insight happens when we are quiet.
  • Relax. It makes our brains more receptive to unique ideas. That's why insights come to us a lot in showers. Relaxation is essential.
  • Turn inward. Close your eyes. Meditate for a while and just watch your thoughts float by and say 'How interesting.' Free your brain from the chatter.
  • Concentrate, yes. But concentrate on letting your mind just wander.
  • Get in a positive frame of mind.

"The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not 'Eureka!' but 'That's funny..." ~Isaac Asimov

All this fire in my soul...

Angel in Waiting by Jackie

"All this fire in my soul, and--provided I am not disturbed--my subject enlarges itself, becomes methodized and defined, and in the whole, though it be long, stands almost complete and finished in my mind, so that I can survey it, like a fine picture or a beautiful statue, at a glance..." ~Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

This is how Mozart described his subjective cognitive experience at his time of greatest productivity. We may recognize it as the "Ah ha!" moment--the point at which everything rapidly, and often suddenly, comes together to form a whole, complete idea, sometimes out of nowhere. This is also known as the moment of insight--the pinnacle of the creative process.

"Compliments to you Pat, for your real ability to get at the heart of the matter. And I mean heart. In just a few sessions you have given me a new source to draw from as I move through my day, respond to demands and make choices at work and at home. One of the ideas I carry with me now is that when we're working on something bigger than ourselves: it raises the bar of communication, changes the definition of competition, makes me aware of other people’s needs and puts me in a mind-frame of generosity and patience. With that in my heart it's easier to remember the list of operational improvements I committed to with you. I do appreciate your asking for an action and a follow up to show off the little triumphs of the day. Thank you for how you are and all you do."
