Message from Pat - A Bigger Game Experience

"When you have decided what you believe, what you feel must be done, have the courage to stand and be counted."

~Eleanor Roosevelt

I have worked with some of you using a model called "The Bigger Game" The Bigger Game is an innovation model that was designed to change, challenge and grow you to become your very best. By game, I simply mean what you are up to in your life. By bigger, I mean something that is bigger than your status quo. The games we choose to play can shrink us, grow us, or keep us in the same old place. Playing a Bigger Game is not "business as usual."

The Bigger Game

I had the opportunity last month to go to Silver Bay, N.Y., to participate in leader training for the revisions that the model has gone through this past year. I was pleased with the changes and reenergized by the impact of the model.

I found out "The Bigger Game: Why Playing a Bigger Game Designs Who You Want to Become" book had been released. One of my Bigger Games, putting on a Women's Day Conference in my county is the last story in the book. This was a multi-year conference held in the San Francisco Bay Area. Women from different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds came together. Through structured conversation cafes we got into deep conversation very quickly and found out, in our uniqueness, there is something of value we all have to give to the World.

I read the words I spoke during the interview for the book about my Bigger Game's impact on who I was because I played that game. "I am no longer fearful to ask for what I need. I'm more confident, more willing to admit that I don't know, more humble, slower to judge, more open-minded, and way more curious."

And I am now asking myself...what is the next game that will feed the hunger I have, and I think we all have, to lead a more meaningful life, one that has impact?

What is the game that serves a more compelling purpose? The purpose that would keep my game going even when the going gets really hard?

What is the game that causes me to question if I can do it. What causes me to "GULP"?

What is the next game for me that causes me to invest in myself to learn something that I don't know and I must learn for the sake of the game?

What is the game that pulls me out of my comfort zone, calls for bold action and calls me to find allies?

What is the game that I must continually assess to know if it's the right game and that I'm in the right square and that I must have the ability to sustain myself to make it real?

I'm looking for my next Bigger Game right now.

What's yours?

"Behold the turtle. He only makes progress when he sticks his neck out."

~ James Bryant Conant

Step into leading and play a Bigger Game in your life...don't wait...model leadership...the World needs us to do this.

Lead strong!

"The True Joy of Life" a quote from George Bernard Shaw

"This is the true joy of life, the being used up for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one: being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. Life is not 'brief candle' to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."

What makes an individual, a group, a community, or an organization successful? Many books, briefs, articles and case studies have been written to address that question. The prevailing conclusion seems to be that successful individuals, groups, communities and organizations align behind a common vision, and their corresponding behaviors, values, attitudes and actions support it.

This appears to be a simple concept, but often difficult to enact. Yet when individuals align their behaviors, attitudes and actions with a compelling vision they experience success. And if they are part of a group, community or an organization that shares a common, compelling vision, they become a model for high performance. Read More...
