Message from Pat

"A man who says he has never been scared is either lying or else he's never been any place or done anything."
- Louis L'Amour

Think of a time in your life when you were just about to take a big leap forward by doing something you had never done before. You were just about to take a step you've never taken before and felt anxious. Perhaps your heart was racing, palms sweating. Perhaps you were breathing a bit shallow and were nervous and shaking a bit. Perhaps you wished you were any other place than where you were at that moment. Perhaps you're feeling it all again at this moment.

That is what is called a GULP!

A GULP! occurs when you are stepping out of a comfort zone into an area that you are not familiar with. If you knew how to do it, it wouldn't provide you with the GULP! If you knew how to do it, it wouldn't provide you with that feeling of 'scary exhilaration'. If you knew how to do it, it wouldn't provide you with the juiciness of leaving a comfort zone and experiencing something new and exciting.

“We fear the thing we want the most."
- Dr. Robert Anthony

What helps us all "Feel the GULP! and do it anyway" is to remember what it is we hunger for...what must be. Remember the concept of hunger and compelling purpose? Now is the time you want to connect with your hunger and compelling purpose. This is what will pull you (not push you) through the GULP! This is what will help you move on to the next GULP!, and GULP! by GULP! have your vision become a reality.

There is an acronym for fear that I've heard several times: False Evidence Appearing Real. When you're feeling that anxiety coming on, think about what you are making up about the situation. Think about what is false about what you are making up.

Here are a few ways to help you move through the GULP!

  • Remember these doubts are a good thing. They mean you are stepping out of your comfort zones and growing.
  • Take action. You'll feel so much better coming out on the other side and it will be easier next time.
  • Find an ally who you can commit to or who has been through the same or a similar situation. You don't have to do this alone.
  • Ask yourself where else could you get the same 'scary exhilaration' feeling of being on a roller coaster (The Manhattan at Las Vegas is a great one!) without paying amusement park prices?
"Many of our fears are tissuepaper thin, and a single courageous step would carry us clear through them."
- Brendan Francis

Step into leading and play a Bigger Game in your life…don't wait…model leadership…the World needs us to do this.

Lead strong!

The Gulp! and The Global Fund for Women

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to interview Anne Firth Murray, the founding president of The Global Fund for Women. Since 1987, the Global Fund for Women has granted over $50 million to more than 3,000 women's groups in 163 countries, enabling each organization to apply the funds to best address the specific needs of women in their communities. Last year, the Global Fund made over $7.7 million in grants.

She has published the book "Paradigm Found: Leading and Managing for Positive Change".

This is an inspiring and instructive story about her successful philanthropic work at The Global Fund for Women. She tells the story of making her vision become a reality.

She talks about losing heart at her then current job and, at a conference she was attending, talked to two friends over dinner about what she was going to do when she left her job. She knew she wanted to begin a program of funding women's groups and her friends encouraged her to talk about it over dinner.

She became obsessed with the idea and thought of it all night.

"All sorts of thoughts raced through my head: I would start this organization – the international women's foundation – and it would give away ten million dollars by the year 2000. People would be invited to join us in our vision – to strengthen women around the world, to change the way they were being seen and they way they saw themselves, and to do this by getting money into women's hands so that they could carry out their own programs."

The next morning she was encouraged by another friend.

"Later that morning, after speaking with Nita, I found myself saying to friends and colleagues at the conference, "Some of us are thinking of creating an international foundation that would benefit women.

By the afternoon, I was saying, 'We're planning to create an international foundation that will benefit women.'

And by the evening, the words became, 'We have created an international foundation that will benefit women.'

It was just that simple and playful. I was making it up as I went along."

Now that's a GULP!

Excerpts from "Paradigm Found: Leading and Managing for Positive Change" by Anne Firth Murray.

Risk

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach for another is to risk involvement.
To expose your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd, is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To believe is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The people who risk nothing do nothing, have nothing, are nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live.
Chained by their attitudes, they are slaves; they have forfeited their freedom.
Only a person who risks is free.

- Poem quoted in "Dear Abby"

Allies

One of my greatest life mentors and allies was my grammar school volleyball coach, Mrs. Schilling.

Before coaching grammar school girls, she was a professional roller derby player. She taught me so much about working with a team, sportsmanship, being a leader, having fun in competition, asking for help from others, appreciating taking care of my healthy body, and above all, helping others to succeed along with me. These were invaluable things to learn as a young girl and have helped me in many ways.

I recently found out about an organization called Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative. Their website states: "We're BAWSI (pronounced "bossy") and proud of it! BAWSI programs create avenues for strong, talented and accomplished women athletes and coaches to inspire girls, women and families with their leadership skills and community service."

One of their programs GoGirlGo! is a program created by the Women's Sports Foundation and implemented in the Bay Area by women college athletes working with girls who do not participate in sports because of economics, health, lack of motivation, encouragement or opportunity.

Give girls the amazing experience and joy of participating in sports.

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, please support them. Visit their website to find out how. If you're not in the Bay Area, ask them how you can support girls in sports in your area.

You can change a girl's life forever.

Testimonial:

"Pat cuts right to the chase, and challenges me to move forward on making steps to take my business to the next level. By asking questions about how I market and sell my services, she found that there are certain areas where I hesitate to go for what I really want. From there she simply asked me why I was making excuses and not taking action! Her questions prompt me to look at my actions, and take action."
