Quote For Your Day!

Message from Pat

"People say that what we're all seeking is the meaning of life…I think that what we're really seeking is the experience of being alive."

- Rudyard Kipling

Alive: "in a state of action; in force; unextinguished; full of life; attentive to; awake or sensitive to." Just a few definitions from The American College Dictionary.

Alive! What a wonderful state of being. I have found that we can really affect change in our lives and inspire those around us when we are truly alive.

One of the ways to be in touch with that aliveness is to be in touch with your 'Hunger'. To be in touch with that which has you be 'in a state of action; in force; unextinguished!'

Last month I wrote about "The Bigger Game" which is a leadership and social change model. One of the elements of "The Bigger Game" is that it feeds the hunger most human beings experience: a hunger for a meaningful life. A hunger for a life that has an impact. A hunger that will bring us Alive!

Otherwise, why are we here?

We look at hunger through three different lenses. Look outside of yourself around these and see what comes up for you:

1.
"No, not that!" "What must not be?" (Example: Some people say "No more war.")
2.
"Yes, more of that!" "What's working that you want to see more of?" (Example: In the field of health care it has been proven that teaching medical students how to work with patients humanely seriously decreases the likelihood of malpractice suits and patient communications is now a required course in some medical schools. We need more medical schools to teach this.)
3.
"What's missing?" "What is not in existence that needs to be?"

Getting in touch with your hunger may be a scary action for some of you. We're taught to turn down our hunger and do so, at times, as a protection. Trust me, getting in touch with your hunger is a state of aliveness. It truly awakens you and will help you get "in a state of action."

What is your highest wish for human kind or the planet?

What do you want to see in your world?

What must change?

What must be?

"The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it."

- Michelangelo

Step into leading and find your Hunger…don't wait…model leadership…the World needs us to do this.

Lead strong!

Transformation

I am often told that the challenges we face in the world are too big for one individual to make a difference. Indeed, many of us believe that leadership is best left to others. But I believe that we are in a time that calls for a redefinition of what it means to be a leader, a time that challenges each of us to take leadership in our lives and in our world. And I believe that each of us has something unique and valuable that we can offer. Each of us is called to be a transformative leader.

Transformative leadership needs to occur on multiple levels simultaneously.

It occurs through intellectual critique and deconstruction of our institutions, scientific worldview and cultural paradigm. It occurs through transdisciplinary discussions and integral learning. It occurs within troubled organizations and institutions as courageous individuals tackle difficult questions of corporate social responsibility, as they confront the dysfunctional nature of corporate cultures, and as they attempt to integrate and apply spirituality and whole-systems thinking. It also occurs as talented workers leave traditional organizations to create new structures, possibilities, alliances and different ways of working.

It occurs in the schools, on the streets, in our homes, and in our hearts. It occurs both as we heal internally and as we turn our gaze outward in an attempt to heal the structures we live in. It occurs as we compassionately listen to each other, as we confront our own blindness and refuse to shirk away from our own power. It occurs as we hope, dream, envision, falter, learn from our mis-steps and try again.

Yes, we need courageous leaders to stand up to multinationals, to facilitate international movements, to initiate new institutions, to stand on podiums and inspire others… we need them to take the risks they take on behalf of the seeds, the water and for future generations. But these leaders alone cannot accomplish the kind of transformation that is needed.

What is required is that each of us takes leadership in our own lives, in our own families and sphere of influence. Small actions can and do make a difference – to our individual lives and to the way our lives impact and intersect with the whole. What is our world made of but millions of small actions every moment? What one does – or doesn't do – matters.

Transformation does not require us to move out of our lives and become something other than we are. It simply asks us to mindfully act in our lives, to act as if the well being of the entire web of life matters.

The Journey by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice –
though the whole house began to tremble
and you felt the old tug at your ankles.
"Mend my life!" each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations,
though their melancholy was terrible.
It was already late enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen branches and stones.
But little by little, as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own,
that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world,
determined to do the only thing you could do—
determined to save the only life that you could save.

Most of you know I am an activist in insuring ethics and credentialing in this relatively new field called 'coaching'. I am a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach through the Coaches Training Institute, a certified Bigger Game Coach and Consultant, and a Leader and Examiner for the Bigger Game certification program. I am also credentialed through the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

Earlier this month a segment on life coaching aired on the U.S. national news program The Today Show. The segment featured International Coaching Federation member Laura Berman Fortgang, MCC. Below you will find a link to a video of this segment.

This segment underlines how important ICF Certification is becoming--even
for established executive coaches.

I hope you get a better understanding of how coaching can help people in their lives.
